By treating objects such as galaxies, and even the Universe itself, as if they were living, evolving organisms, astronomers and cosmologists are gaining new insights into the nature of the world, its origins and its ultimate fate. And key concepts related to the way living things operate also turn up in . . . the so-called transactional interpretation [of quantum mechanics]. I do not claim that it is anything more than a fiction; all scientific models are simply Kiplingesque 'just so' stories that give us a feeling that we understand what is going on, without necessarily incorporating any ultimate answers about the Universe.

Back Bay Books, 1995
The transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics extends Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory. Gribbin calls it a 'fiction' to emphasize that it is a human construction, not an objective reality.
