The Dalai Lama's affirmation [of compassion] is the total
opposite of superficial, all-purpose maxim. It is in fact the
result of
extremely careful research.
In the final analysis the
compassion he speaks of is in us; it's a feeling that is peculiar
to us and more powerful than our violent instincts. But
many negative forces,
which we constantly see manifesting themselves
around us, and in ourselves as well, obscure that profound energy
and stifle it in our own eyes. Hence we have to
search continuously for compassion
within us; we have to recognize and practice it.
