Organic chemistry is just carbon chemistry, no more mysterious than
any other chemistry, just immensely richer because of the unique
associative properties of the carbon atom. Organic carbon
compounds are everywhere. They make up 20 percent of interstellar
dust, and interstellar dust makes up 0.1 percent of galactic
matter. In this organic cloud, which pervades the universe, life is almost bound to arise, in a molecular form not very different from its form on Earth, wherever physical conditions are similar to those that prevailed on our planet some four billion years ago. This conclusion seems to me inescapable. |
