In living systems in particular, autopoietic closure is realized through a continuous structural change under conditions of continuous material interchange with the medium. . . . As a result, a structurally plastic living system either operates as a structurally determined homeostatic system that maintains invariant its organization under conditions of continuous structural change, or it disintegrates.
